SUMMARY: Hide or show the volume control settings from your Windows 2000 taskbar.
To remove (or add) a speaker icon on the taskbar from where the sound volume can be raised or lowered, choose "Start" - "Settings" - "Control Panel". From here, choose "Sounds and Multimedia". When the "Sounds and Multimedia" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, choose the "Sounds" tab. Now, check or uncheck the "Show volume control on the taskbar" box as desired, and then press "OK".

The above method works for putting the volume control on the task bar. Problem is everytime I update Windows, there goes the volume control, gone again! Isn't there a permanent way to assign the volume control (and other options) to the task bar?
