Audio Files Stuttering?

SUMMARY: Help if your audio files, including MP3 files, are stuttering with Windows 2000.

Are your digital audio files, such as MP3 files, stuttering or playing offbeat on your Windows 2000 system? One possible culprit is your network, or lack thereof.

If you have a network card, wired or wireless, and are normally connected to a network or the Internet but are currently offline, Windows constantly re-queries the network device to see if it can reconnect to the network. While this sometimes is useful, it does take up CPU cycles, and this constant polling can interfere with music (MP3) playback.

One temporary solution is to disable network adapters that are not currently in use. To do so, click the "Start" button, choose "Settings", then "Network & Dial-Up Adapters". From the window that appears, right-click on network adapters that are temporarily not in use and choose "Disable."

Three caveats: You rarely, if ever, need to disable dial-up adapters, as these usually do not get polled for network activity. Make sure NOT to disable adapters in use or you will get kicked off the network. Also, before you reboot your Windows 2000 machine or want to reconnect to the network, perform the above operation, but right-click on the needed network adapters and choose "Enable".
