Windows 2000 and Tweak UI - Hide Control Panel Icons

If you share your Windows 2000 computer with others who like to change system settings, you may wish to hide Control Panel icons from them. This is possible with Tweak UI. Note that while this is a quick way to keep most people from changing settings, hiding the icons does not complete remove their functionality - someone who knows what they are doing can access the files directly. Plus, someone could also go to the same section in Tweak UI and re-enable the icons.

To hide Control Panel icons with Tweak UI:

1. Download, install, and run Tweak UI for Windows 2000 using the tips mentioned in MalekTips.

2. When "Tweak UI" starts, click the "Control Panel" tab.

3. You should see a list of control panel icon filenames such as "access.cpl" and what the filenames do. Uncheck a particular filename to hide the icon.

4. To make it harder for people to re-enable the icons, you may wish to hide the Tweak UI PowerToy. If so, uncheck "tweakui.cpl".

5. Press "OK" to close the dialog box.

If you disable showing the Tweak UI PowerToy from the Control Panel, here's how to access it:

1. Click the "Start" button.

2. Choose "Run..."

3. Enter "tweakui.cpl" (without quotes).

4. Click "OK".
