Windows 95 Misc

Adding to the Windows 'Tip of the Day'

SUMMARY: Help out Windows 95 newcomers with this tip.

When setting up Windows 95 machines for others, you may want to add to the tips presented under the "Welcome" or "Tip of the Day" screen that defaults to appearing whenever Windows 95 starts. To do so, you need to edit the Registry.

**Before doing so, make a backup!**

Open up Registry Editor by clicking on the "Start" button, choosing "Run," and entering in "regedit" and pressing OK. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ Tips. You will see on the right-pane of the Registry Editor a list of numbers and their corresponding tips. To add a tip, first find the highest tip number available. Right-click on "Tips" and choose "New," then "String Value" on the pop-up menu which appears. Enter the next highest number for the value. Right-click that number and choose "Modify" from the pop-up menu that appears. You can now type in your new tip.

Return to the Windows 95 Misc page.
