Windows 95 CDs

Change My Default CD Player

SUMMARY: Here's how to change Windows 95's default CD player.

Have you downloaded a great Windows 95 CD player off the Internet and you want to make it your default CD player?

1. Double-click "My Computer."
2. Click the "View" menu of the window that appears, selecting "Options."
3. On the multi-tabbed dialog box that appears, click the "File Types" tab.
4. Scroll down and select "AudioCD" and press the "Edit" button.
5. Now, on the dialog box that appears, double-click on the word "Play" under "Actions".
6. Under "Application used to perform action:" type in the path to your desired CD player, or use the "Browse" button to find the desired program.
7. When you are done, press the "OK" button to close the "Editing Action" dialog box.
8. Press "OK" to close the previous dialog boxes.

Note that you probably will need to add a command-line option to force your CD player software to actually start up the music CD - see your CD player documentation for information.

If you later decide to use the default CD player, go through the above steps, and under "Application used to perform action:", type in "cdplayer.exe /play" (without using the quotes) and press the "OK" button.
