| Suggestions for Removing MSDOS-Compatibility Mode SUMMARY: Enhance your hard drive speed by removing MSDOS Compatibility Mode under Windows 95.
You know it if it's happened to you - slow hard drive access, missing mouse pointer animations, and a general sluggishness in everything from loading applications to finding files. MSDOS-Compatibility Mode occurs when Windows 95 can not load the native 32-bit drivers for your floppy, hard, and/or CD-ROM drives; it is then forced to use the slower 16-bit drivers.
Although there is no 'foolproof' way to remove MSDOS-Compatibility Mode, these suggestions may help.
1. Virus scan your system. There are many viruses around that, if they affect your system, cause Windows 95 to be unable to use 32-bit device drivers for your drives.
2. If you are running OnTrack(c) or EZDisk(c) to allow your computer to recognize large hard drives, check your drive manufacturer's website for the latest update. Older versions of such software would not allow Windows 95 to use 32-bit drivers.
3. Check your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files found in your root directory for 16-bit drivers needed to access your media. If found, you need to find updated 32-bit drivers.
4. If you are using a newer motherboard with two IDE channels and have your hard drive(s) connected to one channel and a device such as a CD-ROM connected to another, visit Microsoft's web site and read knowledge base article Q151911 which discusses a common problem on these systems.
