Windows 95 and DOS

Aggressively Seek DOS Prompt Idle Time

SUMMARY: Keep multiple Windows 95 DOS prompts from hogging the computer's CPU.

Most MS-DOS programs were not written under the premise that they could be run under a multitasking operating system. MS-DOS programs, especially utilities and applications, spend most of their time merely waiting for user input. If you run several programs concurrently, this can result in a drain on the CPU resources. There is, however, a method to significantly increase how aggressive Windows 95 seeks this "idle time" and frees up resources for other apps:

First, right-click on an MS-DOS program that is not set for "MS-DOS mode" and choose "Properties." On the "Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box that follows, choose the "Misc." tab. There is a slider bar under the words "Idle sensitivity." Click and drag the bar to the left if it is running too slowly or has very little idle time. Dragging it to the right causes Win95 to allocate fewer resources for the program. Lastly, Click the "OK" button.
