| Verify Your Internet Dial-Up Connection SUMMARY: Confirm your Windows 95 dial up connection is running.
Even though your dial-up connection to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) *seems* successful, there may be times where your connection actually breaks - even though you still are connection to your ISP. You can try to access websites, send e-mail, etc., with no luck. If this happens to you often, you may need to check your Internet connection to see if you are actually still online.
The PING program, in your WINDOWS or WINNT directory, allows you to see if another Internet site is currently accessible. By using this utility on your ISP's domain, you can see if it is accessible. Naturally, your ISP should always be accessible if you connected to it, so if it is not accessible, more than likely your Internet connection is down.
Run PING by going to your Windows 95 DOS prompt, typing in PING, a space, and your service provider's Internet address, and pressing ENTER. If you see "No resources available," nothing at all, or if the modem receive light (the right light on your modem icon on the taskbar) does not flash, chances are your Internet connection is gone. Either wait and try again in a minute or two (net congestion does happen) or disconnect and reconnect to your ISP.
