Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking

Remove Dial-Up Networking Protocols

SUMMARY: Diagnose Windows 95 dial-up networking problems and remove potential security risks by removing needless protocols.

If you are using dial-up networking to connect to the Internet and are using a PPP connection (Point-To-Point Protocol), you may have some extra network protocols installed that you do not need, including some that may pose security risks. Under most circumstances, all you need is TCP/IP. To disable unneeded network protocols, first click the "Start" button, choosing "Accessories," then "Dial-Up Networking." Right-click on your connection's icon, choosing "Properties." On the multi-tabbed dialog box that appears, click "Server Properties." On the dialog box that appears, uncheck "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX Compatible" if checked, and close the dialog boxes.

This is just a suggestion. If you begin to have problems accessing the Internet after disabling these protocols, go back and recheck them to re-enable them.
