Windows 95 Fonts - Fonts Still Slow 16-Bit Apps

One of the advantages of using Win95 over previous versions is its better handling of resources. While 16 bit applications still use a limited resource space, 32-bit applications have access to much greater areas of memory to hold graphics, window, task, etc. information. Thanks to this, Win95 will support MANY more fonts than previous versions before it begins to take up too much of the valuable resource space.

This is all fine and good when 32-bit apps are being run, but most people still use the occasional 16-bit application; with these apps, a large amount of fonts will cause the application to crawl just as much as it would under previous versions of Windows.

Therefore, it is recommended that if you still use 16-bit applications, try to be conservative regarding the amount of fonts installed on the system at once. 125-150 is a fair amount of fonts, but reducing that to 75-100 gives even better performance with 16-bit applications. When performance is critical, choose only the fonts you need for a certain project, and install others later as desired after removing older fonts.
