Windows 95 Installation and Upgrading - Do I Still Need My Autoexec.Bat and Config.Sys Files?

A question that often is asked is that, after upgrading to Windows 95, are the autoexec.bat and config.sys files still needed?

Yes and no.

After you upgrade, check through your autoexec.bat file. If any lines start with a REM, you can probably safely remove them. If all of your lines start with REM, chances are you can delete the file.

If you have legacy hardware, there still may be some needed drivers in your config.sys file. If this does not apply to you, go ahead and rename the file to config.test and see what happens.

To restate the answer - you may not need such files, but it is impossible in this trick to say you will or you will not need the files - it all depends on your computer's configuration. Try booting your system and working without the files. If your computer runs fine, chances are the files are not needed.
