SUMMARY: Stop putting a strain on your eyes when reading text on your Windows 98 computer.
Windows 98 comes built-in with a feature called font smoothing. This causes light-colored dots (pixels) to be added around the jagged edges of displayed characters, making the words on-screen look smoother, and for most people, easier to read. The only downside to font smoothing is that it might slow down older computers slightly. This may be a very small price to pay to make your Windows 98 computer easier to use!
To turn on font smoothing if it is not already enabled, right-click on an empty area of your desktop and choose "Properties". When the "Desktop Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the "Effects" tab. Now, check "Smooth edges of screen fonts" if it is not already enabled. Press "OK" to close the dialog box.
Font smoothing can also make many webpages much easier to read, putting less strain on your eyes.
