April 20, 2014, at 3:41 P.M. EDT

Typing a comment on a webpage and curious if you're getting a little long-winded? Writing a blog post for an assignment and need to satisfy a word count minimum? Or writing an article and want to get an estimated readability score to help ensure your text can be understood by as many people as possible?

The "Word Count Tool" extension for Mozilla Firefox lets you select a block of text on a webpage and see the word and character counts in the Add-On bar. Pressing Ctrl + Alt + C (or navigating the right-click menu) shows an enhanced details screen displaying the number of sentences, paragraphs, average word length, estimated readability score, and more....

Internet Explorer 11 : Place Sites Directly in the Start Menu for Easy Access

Add links to frequently-visited websites directly to the Windows Start Menu.

April 20, 2014, at 3:41 P.M. EDT

Are there websites you visit often enough with Internet Explorer 11 that you would like to make opening them up more convenient? Instead of navigating the Favorites menu of IE11, you can pin links to websites directly to the Windows Start Menu.

After opening the website from Internet Explorer 11, perform the following steps depending on your Windows interface:...

Windows 8 : Tweak the Explorer Navigation Pane

Missing seeing Libraries in Explorer? Want to see a full list of folders? Or do you not need to see the Favorites?

April 19, 2014, at 3:57 P.M. EDT

When opening folders via Explorer in Windows 8.1, you may notice that the Libraries aren't automatically present. Plus, if you open Explorer to a particular folder, that folder is not automatically expanded. Also, you may not find much need for the Favorites section. Luckily you can tweak what Windows Explorer shows:

1. From an Explorer window, click the "View" menu, then select "Options"....

Windows 8 : Stop Rearranging My Windows!

Prevent Windows 8.1 from automatically rearranging and resizing windows when they are moved to the edges.

April 19, 2014, at 3:57 P.M. EDT

Just as with Windows 7, when you move windows to the borders of the Windows 8.1 Desktop, they will automatically rearrange and resize. For example, moving a window to the top will make it appear full screen (except for the Taskbar unless it is set to Auto-hide), and moving a window to the left or right edge will make it fill half the screen.

While some people appreciate this automatically occurring, advanced users and those who want more control over their window placements may find this feature extremely annoying. Luckily, it can be disabled:...

[MODIFIED] Buying a Digital Camera : Hidden Costs with Higher Megapixel Cameras

Higher-megapixel digital cameras may have hidden costs besides just the cost of the camera.

April 17, 2014, at 4:06 P.M. EDT

High megapixel modern digital cameras generally allow one to take photos with much greater clarity than with cameras made in years past. Mistakes can be cropped out, larger photos can be printed, and more details can be made clearly visible, allowing one to take photos that more accurately represent a treasured memory. Modern cameras also may let you shoot HD video, offering even more enjoyment from your investment.

However, before you plunk down money on a new high megapixel digital camera, recognize there may be some 'hidden' costs to use this technology to its fullest:...

Windows 8 : Resize Start Screen Tiles

Change the size of tiles on your Windows 8.1 Start screen to show or hide live tile details.

April 17, 2014, at 4:01 P.M. EDT

Are some of the tiles on your Window 8.1 Start screen taking up too much room and you'd like to fit more on the screen simultaneously? Or do you only have a few apps installed (or a large monitor with lots of free space) and want to show as much information and pictures as possible from live tiles such as News, Store, and Weather?

To resize tiles on your Start Screen, just do the following:...

April 16, 2014, at 4:25 P.M. EDT

By default, when you search the web with Internet Explorer 11, the Bing search engine from Microsoft is used.

[MODIFIED] IrfanView : Disable Most Recently Used Files and Folders for Privacy

Increase your privacy by making IrfanView forget the most recently accessed files and folders.

April 16, 2014, at 4:25 P.M. EDT

For convenience, IrfanView offers an "Open Recent files" option in its "File" menu, providing you quick access to files you have opened lately. Also, when opening and saving files, IrfanView shows the most recently-access folders as well as commonly-accessed areas such as your Desktop, My Pictures, Favorites, etc.

While these features may be useful if you frequently modify the same files, or images in a particular file location, having this information readily available may violate your privacy if multiple people share the same machine. Thus, you can stop IrfanView from showing this information if desired:...

Access the menu and search boxes at the top of long webpages browsed in Google Chrome with this shortcut button.

April 15, 2014, at 4:56 P.M. EDT

When browsing a large web page such as a Wikipedia article or a list of Facebook posts in Google Chrome, if you need to jump back to the top of the page to use the site's menu, search features, or sign-in boxes, does scrolling take too much time?

While pressing Ctrl + Home immediately jumps to the top of the current web page, not everyone remembers this keyboard shortcut. With the "Scroll to Top" extension, you can add to Google Chrome's toolbar a red up-arrow that performs this same feat....

Google Gmail : Show Maps Automatically in Emails Instead of Copying and Pasting

If you often receive addresses via Google Gmail, why copy and paste them into a Google Maps window?

April 15, 2014, at 4:56 P.M. EDT

Depending on your electronic mail habits, you may have contacts that often need to send addresses to your Gmail account. When you get these addresses and need to view them on a map, would you rather A) copy and paste the addresses into a new browser tab running Google Maps, or B) have Gmail show the maps automatically inside the e-mail messages?

If your answer is "B", there is a Google Labs extension that will do just that, and it's easy to set up:...
