When taking photos of wildlife in their natural habitat, especially if you have to hike or backpack, consider bringing along a more compact digital camera instead of a digital SLR and several zoom lenses.

Small digital cameras are less likely to intimidate animals, they are less likely to be seen if you have to hide or crawl to get close to your subject, and they are much easier to carry if you have to travel a long distance by foot.

With today's modern digital cameras you do not have to sacrifice many megapixels; when this tip was written you could get a 5 megapixel compact digital camera with powerful zoom, easily enough resolution to print out an 8x10 or larger photo. When you read this tip, 8 megapixel or larger digital cameras may be available.
