Buying a Scanner

Make Sure it has a Matching Interface

SUMMARY: Ensure your scanner uses a type of communications interface (USB, Firewire) your computer supports.

Before you purchase a scanner, make sure that you can hook the scanner up to your computer with a compatible interface. Scanners typically can connect to your computer via USB (recommended), Firewire (highly recommended if your computer supports it), parallel port (most compatible but slowest), or SCSI. Make sure that your computer has whatever interface your scanner expects or the investment may go to waste unless you purchase and install (or have installed) a matching interface card in your machine.
