Why Use the Lens Shade?

SUMMARY: Attaching a lens shade to your digital camera is an extra hassle when taking photos - here's why it's worth it.

Most middle to high-end digital cameras support a lens shade (sometimes called a lens hood) that attaches to the lens of the camera, somewhat shielding it from sunlight. Many digital cameras even come prepackaged with such an accessory. However, if you are taking photos in low light conditions, you may consider not using the lens shade:

"Lens shades are just something else to fool with."

"Lens shades have to be screwed on correctly or photos end up showing black areas around the corners."

However, there are three good reasons for always using a lens shade with your digital camera:

1. Even in low light situations, a lens shade will still help direct light towards your digital camera, often resulting in better photographs.

2. A lens shade can help protect your lens from floating dust and debris, possibly prolonging the life of your lens.

3. A lens shade can help reduce glare on digital photos, common when taking outdoor pictures on bright, sunny days.
