Lighter Tripods Aren't Always Better

SUMMARY: Make sure your tripod can support the weight of your digital camera and then some.

Especially if you plan to travel or hike with a tripod, you might be tempted to just buy the lightest tripod you can find. Who wants to deal with an extra heavy piece of equipment?

Not so fast! When purchasing a tripod, check to see how much weight it can hold. Not only must it hold your digital camera, but if you plan on using an add-on flash, factor that as well plus a bracket. Are you using a digital SLR? Factor the weight of add-on lenses which can get quite bulky if you purchase extreme telephoto lenses.
