Digital Photography - Exposure Compensation Tool

SUMMARY: Use exposure compensation to lighten or darken your digital photos.

While most modern digital cameras handle auto exposure settings based on lighting conditions, giving your photos vivid colors and providing image detail clarity, there will be times where the automatic detection is slightly off. Perhaps the photo might end up a little too light (overexposed) or slightly too dark (underexposed).

If this is the case, instead of changing your metering adjustments, you may wish to use your digital camera's EV (exposure compensation) tool. This provides for slight adjustments via several positive (to increase photo brightness) or negative (to decrease photo brightness) stops. The best way to learn is by experimentation, and also by using your digital camera's bracketing mode to bracket over several EV stops.
