Capture Reflections on Water

SUMMARY: Find lakes, streams, and oceans that reflect their surroundings for dazzling digital photos.

Reflections of buildings, animals, or people on water can make for some very nice photographs. Though this may require patience in waiting for wind to calm down and a source of water to remain still, the results can definitely be worth the effort. Capture reflections of riverfront homes or buildings, or mountains towering over a graceful lake.

In these types of photos, you shouldn't look to center your focus on the horizon; consider pointing your camera lens downward or crouching down to get more of the reflection in the photo than the surface being reflected. You may also need to use your exposure compensation tool to adjust the overall brightness of the photo; you don't want the reflection in the water too dark, nor do you want the reflecting objects washed out.

If the water is too bright, you may consider purchasing and using a polarizing lens to tone down the sunlight reflecting off the water.
