SUMMARY: Don't buy a new digital camera a day before a big trip - you won't have time to learn its features.
Several times I have purchased a new digital camera before a trip. In fact, my first digital camera was an Epson 1-megapixel, no zoom camera (yes, this was a few years ago!), purchased before a trip to Florida. If you purchase a digital camera before a big trip, buy the camera a week or two in advance. This will give you a chance to scan through the manual and get comfortable with the camera and its features.
