Digital Travel Photography - Trip Preparation - Call Ahead Before Visiting a Lighthouse

SUMMARY: Planning to climb a lighthouse to take great digital photos? Call ahead and ensure it is open.

Before driving dozens or even hundreds of miles out of the way to visit a historic lighthouse for great digital photos, especially if you plan on climbing the stairs to take 'aerial' pictures, call ahead first!

Make sure the lighthouse is actually open to the public and not closed for remodeling, repairs, etc. This has happened to me several times where I have traveled many miles thinking I would get a great view, only to be disappointed by an employee at the gift shop telling me the lighthouse is closed for repair.
