Digital Waterfall Photography - Consider Shooting on Cloudy Days

SUMMARY: Overcast days may be perfect times to take digital photos of roaring waterfalls.

Although you might find partly cloudy days depressing and dreary, look on the bright side (pun intended). Since the sunlight is diffused and not so bright and focused, overcast days can be perfect for shooting photos of waterfalls.

If clouds hide the sun, your digital camera's metering system is less likely to be confused by the wide variances of brightness. Plus, you can take longer exposures that help showcase the movement of the water. With less direct sunlight hitting the lens during the photo, you decrease the chances of the resulting picture getting overexposed (a neutral density filter can help with this problem on sunny days but it requires manual exposure compensation adjustments).

Note, however, that if there is less available sunlight, you may need to support your camera via a tripod. Be sure to place it on a dry, sturdy surface.
