File Recovery - Undelete - DiskInternals Uneraser

SUMMARY: DiskInternals Uneraser is a commercial file recovery product for Windows.

DiskInternals Uneraser is a commercial file recovery package, though you can try a feature-limited trial before purchasing. The software supports recovery on many types of storage media including digital camera memory. Windows 95 and up are supported (Windows 7 support was not listed when this tip was written).

Files can be previewed with Uneraser before recovery is attempted, allowing you to determine whether or not valid information can be retrieved. Plus, to help prevent overwriting files during the recovery process, recovered files can be burned to a CD or DVD, or distributed over the Internet via FTP.

Note that the unregistered version will not save recovered files even though you can preview them.

DiskInternals Uneraser has an Explorer-like interface, but a Wizard is available to make searching for files easier. With the Explorer-like interface, to scan a drive for possibly recoverable files, just double-click it. After the software searches for lost files, double-click folders to see if files exist that may be recoverable. Just as with Windows Explorer, you can perform a Search to find files.

When you find a file that you want to recover, consider using the "Preview" option to see if data can actually be recovered. Uneraser lets you preview files in a variety of modes - right-click the "Preview" pane to select from an image, Office document, text file, raw Hexadecimal/text, and more. Then to recover a file, just click on it and press the "Recover" button to start the recovery process.

As with all file recovery software, results will vary based on many factors including whether a drive has been defragged, amount of computer use since the file was deleted, etc. Even if software claims to recover a file, information may be lost.
