Electronic Mail

Watch For Filter Traps

SUMMARY: Keep your e-mail from accidentally getting deleted.

With the onslaught of spam, viruses, and worms sent via e-mail, many people are filtering their inboxes against such threats. Unfortunately, e-mail filters are not magic; they are software packages written by people, and they run by following a set of rules. Don't let your legitimate mail get filtered. Here are some tips on writing subjects for your legitimate e-mail that don't get filtered.

1. DON'T WRITE IN ALL CAPS
2. Avoid lots of exclamation points!!!!
3. Placing the word 'spam' in your subject might cause your email to get filtered.
4. You might like free stuff, but your recipient might prove tired of the subject.
5. HTML mail may look nice with its many fonts and colors, but it may get filtered.
6. An email subject of just 'hi' or 'hello' may cause the message to never get read.
