SUMMARY: Rename Master is a file renaming utility for Windows that can add JPG and MP3 properties to filenames.
Operating a website or performing file maintenance and need to perform a mass-rename of a group of files on a Windows system? Looking to organize your JPG images and would like to quickly add the dimensions to the filenames? Or do you have many MP3 music files and need to arrange them better into directories for syncing with a digital audio player, with filenames in a certain format such as "ARTIST - SONGTITLE.mp3" such as "Buddy Guy - First Time I Met the Blues.mp3"?
You can perform these and other types of file renaming tasks with "Rename Master", a freeware application from JoeJoe's freeware utilities. This application lets you rename a group of files by adding or deleting characters at the beginning, end, or a particular position; performing an entire replacement of the name, extension, or a particular phrase; and more. You can even add dimensions and the date to JPG files as well as the artist name, album name, track number, and/or track name to MP3 music files.
Rename Master has a "Getting Started" tutorial in its "Help" menu
For example, in a folder containing JPGs, I wanted to add the image dimensions to the filenames. You can see this task and the results in the below screenshot:
Adding JPG image dimensions to files via Rename Master
Upon running "Rename Master" I did the following:
1) Selected the folder containing the JPG files
2) Unchecked all non-JPG files
3) Clicked the eraser to clear all tasks
4) Clicked the "New Step" button, selecting "Add to Begnning/Ending"
5) Added a space, dash, another space, and then clicked the arrow to add the JPG "width x height"
6) Selected to add this text at the "Ending"
7) Clicked the rename button (located at the bottom-right of the window with two arrows) to perform the rename process
This created filenames like so:
bay - 1024 x 768.jpg
beach-11 - 800 x 600.jpg
breaking-the-clouds-on-winter-day - 986 x 716.jpg
Renaming scripts can be saved and reloaded as needed. An undo operation lets you revert the filenames if you don't like the renaming results. JPG images can be previewed. Plus, configuration options include adding a shortcut to Explorer's "Send To" menu, altering the colors, and automatically altering the filenames' cases in case you need to lowercase all filenames to better fit a Un*x-style file system.
You can download "Rename Master" at the following link as as a ZIP file- note that while the archive includes a setup program, it is not required. Simply copy RenameMaster.exe to a folder on your system (or make a new folder) and run the application.
