SUMMARY: Tired of boring weather forecasts? AniWeather displays large animated graphics and radar maps.
Mozilla Firefox has a variety of extensions available to display current weather, radar images, forecasts, severe weather alerts, etc. What makes AniWeather stand out are its animated forecasts. As their extension page states, "when it rains, it really does!"
AniWeather adds icons to the Firefox status bar with the current conditions; hover over these icons for more details including animated weather graphics. The sun shines, rain falls, clouds float, etc. For U.S.A. users, the program also displays icons for severe weather alerts and satellite images; hover over these icons to see more detailed maps. Clicking on icons fades the current web page, displaying an overlay of either radar images or a longer-term forecast with larger animated graphics.
Larger weather forecast displayed by double-clicking AniWeather status bar icon
1. Visit the following page from within Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12331
2. Click the "Add to Firefox" button.
3. The "Software Installation" dialog box will eventually appear. Click "Install Now" as soon as the button is enabled.
Installing the AniWeather add-on
4. Once the add-on has installed, click the "Restart Firefox" button. Depending on your configuration, Firefox may note that it will try to restart your windows and tabs.
5. When Firefox restarts, the AniWeather configuration will appear as a new tab. From here you can change temperature measurements (this will require a restart), available and default locations, which icons to display and whether the maps should appear animated (additional icons include the UV index, precipitation, and air quality), condition reporting times, and various appearance settings.
Customizing AniWeather options
You can later re-access the settings by clicking the gears (settings) button when displaying full-screen forecasts/maps, or right-clicking any AniWeather status bar icon and choosing "Setting".
