Mozilla Firefox - Plugins and Extensions - Test Websites by Resizing the Browser to Exact Dimensions

SUMMARY: See how websites appear in different display resolutions by resizing the Mozilla Firefox web browser to exact dimensions.

When designing a website with a fluid layout, it may prove beneficial to test it with a variety of display resolutions. This helps ensure the site appears correctly for those with different monitor or window sizes. To aid in this endeavor, the Firesizer plug-in for Mozilla Firefox lets you resize the browser window to exact dimensions via the status bar.

1. Visit the following website from within Firefox:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5792

Note that most extensions are from third party developers. Installation and use of extensions are solely at your own risk.

2. Click the "Add to Firefox" button.

3. The "Software Installation" dialog box will eventually appear. Click "Install Now" as soon as the button is enabled.

4. Once the add-on has installed, click the "Restart Firefox" button. Depending on your configuration, Firefox may note that it will try to restart your windows and tabs.

Once Firefox has restarted, look at the right side of the status bar to see the current window size. Right-click the dimensions and a pop-up will appear allowing you to change to the following three dimensions:

* 640 x 480
* 800 x 600
* 1024 x 768

You can select "Save current size" to save the current window size to the pop-up list.

You can further customize this list by selecting "Customize" from the pop-up menu. Select a dimension and click "Delete" to remove it, or enter a custom dimension and click the "Add" button to add it to the menu.
