Mozilla Firefox - Download and Installation - Why Use a Different Web Browser Such as Firefox?

SUMMARY: Why should you consider using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer?

You may have noticed the Mozilla Firefox web browser mentioned in news media or on web sites such as MalekTips.

Why should you consider using a different web browser other than Internet Explorer or the browser you are currently running? Here are three reasons:

* As Mozilla Firefox is an open-source development effort, many in the Internet community believe added features and standards support are more likely to be integrated into this browser than future versions of Internet Explorer.

* Although later versions of Firefox may not run, version 2 does run on Windows 98 and Windows ME.

* Mozilla Firefox comes built-in with popup window blocking and you can enable or disable it by site. Internet Explorer 6 only supports this in Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP, 2003, and Vista.

* Mozilla Firefox, having a smaller user base, is much less likely to be infected by spyware than Internet Explorer 6 or 7. Most spyware and adware are currently not targeting Firefox. Plus, Firefox does not support ActiveX controls, eliminating many of the ways spyware can infect your web browser. Also, Firefox is not ingrained into the operating system, meaning that problems affecting Firefox may not affect your OS as a whole.
