Google Gmail - What is Gmail Electronic Mail?

Gmail is Google's free e-mail service. As of June 12, 2005, this is still in beta.

Gmail's claim to fame is its amount of free storage. As of 6/12/05 users get over 2,200 megabytes of free storage. This way, you hardly ever have to delete e-mail (unless it contains huge file attachments). Thus you can potentially search through all messages you ever send or receive.

Google pays for this service by displaying targeted text-based ads next to your e-mail. According to its privacy policy, the process of ads being targeted next to your e-mail messages "is completely automated and involves no humans".

There are several ways to get a Gmail account; you cannot sign up for one on the page:

1) Ask someone with a current Gmail account if they can invite you. Some Gmail account-holders have the ability to invite others to get an account.

2) Rumor (and I do mean rumor!) has it that if you have a Blogger.com account you may eventually get invited for Gmail.

3) Supposedly Gmail accounts can be purchased through websites such as eBay. I'd be careful about going about this route.
