Google Groups searches a large USENET archive consisting of topics from quite a while back. If you're finding many ancient topics in your searches and only want to view messages written in the past six months or so, do the following:

(Note that this tip was written on April 18, 2005 - the interface is subject to change).

1. Click on the "Advanced Groups Search" link.

2. When the "Advanced Search" page appears, next to "Message Dates", click the "Return messages posted" radio button.

3. Click on the pull-down to the right to only search messages in the past week, month, 6 months, year, or whatever.

4. Optionally, click the "Return messages posted between" radio button to select messages posted in a desired range of dates.

5. Enter your search query in the "Find messages" section.

6. Click "Google Search" to search the groups.
