File Splitters

GSplit Creates Self Uniting Split Files

SUMMARY: GSplit can split up large files for distribution and contains a variety of options. An optional file joining wizard can be distributed with the split pieces.

GSplit is a freeware file splitting/joining application for Windows, useful for splitting files for distribution via electronic mail, instant messaging, portable media such as CDs and DVDs, or other means. The software supports the creation of disk spanned pieces, or you can create block pieces with a pre-determined size.

GSplit can add "Self-Uniting Functionality" to the spanned set, creating an executable that acts as a wizard in uniting the pieces together. This way you do not have to include GSplit with the re-united pieces, just a much smaller distributable executable. However, GSplit itself (via the GUnite tool) can re-unite pieces without the wizard.

You can customize the filenames for the split pieces as well as provide identity information such as an archive title, name, and description. When creating spanned pieces, you can force the application to leave a customizable amount of room on the first or all disks. Each file can have GSplit tags, and you can add additional headers to pieces. If using the "Self-Uniting Functionality", customization options include the executable icon and welcome message.

Other features include calculating file MD5, CRC32, and hex checksums. A "Split Express" window acts as a wizard in creating pieces with minimal customization needed. A "Piece Inspector" displays properties of file pieces. Profiles can be saved and re-loaded as needed.

GSplit runs on virtually all versions of Windows, Windows 95 and above (though users of this old version will need to acquire additional files mentioned on the download page). Portable versions are available:
