Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
Prevent Internet Explorer 7 from Automatically Downloading
SUMMARY: Block Microsoft from trying to send you Internet Explorer 7 automatically.
Due to corporate policy, if you are still using Internet Explorer 6 on a machine that supports version 7 (Windows XP and Windows Server 2003), you've probably grown tired of notifications of Internet Explorer 7 coming in as a High-Priority update via Automatic Updates.
To prevent Internet Explorer 7's High Priority status, you can install Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 Blocker Toolkit.
Internet Explorer 7 will still be listed as a Recommended Update, and you can still download Internet Explorer 7 manually if you finally decide to upgrade. However, this toolkit should at least prevent the constant warnings and notifications from Microsoft.
If you do not wish to download the toolkit, the following registry edit should do the trick.
1. Create the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Setup \ 7.0
2. Add the following DWORD:
DoNotAllowIE70
3. Give the DWORD a value of 1.
Return to the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 page.
