Define a Highlighted Word via Dictionary.com

SUMMARY: Instead of accessing a search engine or third-party website for a word you need defined, merely highlight it and select the Dictionary.com Accelerator.

While browsing a website with Internet Explorer 8 have you come across a word that you need defined? You could highlight the word, copy it, paste it into a search engine, and then press the engine's search button. You could highlight the word, copy it, and then paste it into Internet Explorer's search box and press Enter. You could visit a word definition website.

Or, if you frequently visit webpages with words you need defined, simply highlight the word and access Dictionary.com via an Accelerator.

Most accelerators are from third-party developers. Installation and use of them are at your own risk. This tip is for informational purposes only.



1. From Internet Explorer, visit the following URL:

http://www.ieaddons.com/en/details/dictionaries/Dictionary_Reference/

2. Click the "Add to Internet Explorer" button.

3. Confirm the Accelerator information is correct. If you want this to be the default Accelerator for the "Define" category, meaning you do not have to go through a second step of accessing an "All Accelerators" submenu, click the "Make this my default provider for this Accelerator Category" box. Then click the "Add" button.

Now find a webpage with a word you need defined and highlight the word. A Blue Accelerator button should appear. Click the button and select "Define with Dictionary.com". Note that if you did not make this the default accelerator for the category, you'll need to first select "All Accelerators", then "Define Dictionary.com". The definition via Dictionary.com should then appear in a new tab.
