Internet Explorer 6 Miscellaneous - Disable Friendly Error Messages

SUMMARY: Tired of Internet Explorer 6 hiding detailed error messages returned from web servers? Disable these 'friendly' messages.

When viewing web pages in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, when an error condition occurs such as a server error (5xx series) or a page not found (404), instead of showing the web server's error message, Internet Explorer will show a 'friendlier' error message instead.

While this 'friendly' message may aid new users in providing some basics about the problem, advanced users may rather see what the server is returning. Also, webmasters diagnosing problems on their web server may wish to see the technical messages returned by their server.

To disable 'friendly' error messages:

1. From Internet Explorer, choose "Tools" - "Options".

2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Advanced" tab.

3. Underneath "Settings", scroll down to and uncheck "Show friendly HTTP error messages".

4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
