SUMMARY: Enable your Internet Explorer Favorites menu if it has been accidentally disabled, or disable it for work machines where you don't want employees to save their links.
Are you unable to view the Favorites menu in Internet Explorer 6? Perhaps it got disabled by a virus or adware / spyware.
Or, do you need to set up a work machine with Internet Explorer 6 for someone else but need to disable the Favorites menu? Some companies may possibly do this for legal reasons as you don't want to get sued based on stored Favorites on a person's computer. (BTW: I am not a lawyer and am not handing out legal advice.)
These changes may be made via the Registry. Note that you must be an Administrator to do so.
NOTE: Be careful what you are doing when modifying the registry as you can harm your computer or keep it from booting! Read the disclaimer.
1. Click the "Start" button.
2. Choose "Run".
3. Enter "regedit" (without the quotes) and press ENTER.
There may be two keys to look at:
* My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\
Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer (current user)
* My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer (local machine)
Note that depending on your configuration, the full second key may not exist. This key should only be used if you need to modify the restrictions for all users on a computer, not just the current one.
* To disable the "Favorites" menu:
1. Create a new key called "Restrictions".
2. In that key, add a DWORD value "NoFavorites".
3. Give that DWORD value a "1".
4. Restart Internet Explorer
* To enable a previously-disabled "Favorites" menu:
1. Underneath the "Restrictions" key should be a DWORD value "NoFavorities" with a value of "1". Give that DWORD value a "0".
2. Restart Internet Explorer.
