Internet Explorer 6 Favorites - Export Favorites to Another Computer

SUMMARY: Want to keep your Internet Explorer 6 Favorites when installing a new computer or want to share your Favorites with others? Here are three options.

Installing a new computer and would like your Internet Explorer 6 Favorites to appear? There are three ways you can do this. All require a floppy disk, CD-Rom, USB Flash drive, or other removable media.

Option A. This takes longer to copy if you have lots of Favorites, but it keeps the icons and visit counts intact:

1. Insert your removable media.

2. Open its folder from "My Computer" if it doesn't automatically appear.

2. Click "Start", choose "Run", enter "%USERPROFILE%" (without the quotes), and press ENTER.

4. Right-click and hold the mouse button down on the "Favorites" folder.

5. Move your mouse to the removable media's folder and release the right mouse button.

6. Select "Copy here".

7. Once the copying is done, burn the CD (if necessary) and safely eject your removable media.

Now on the other computer:

1. Insert your removable media.

2. Open its folder from "My Computer" if it doesn't already open.

3. Open the "Favorites" folder on the removable media.

4. Click "Start", choose "Run", enter "%USERPROFILE%\Favorites" (without the quotes) and pressing ENTER.

5. Select all items in the "Favorites" folder on the removable media ("Edit" - "Select All").

6. Right-click on one of the selected files and hold the mouse button down.

7. Move your mouse to the computer's Favorites folder and release the right mouse button.

8. Select "Copy here". During copying you may be prompted to replace files if they already exist on the computer.

8. Once the copying is done, safely eject your removable media.

Option B. Use if Option A's Favorites won't all fit on a floppy disk or other removable device). This may also work faster since copying one large file to removable media usually takes less time than copying dozens or hundreds of small files.

1. Repeat the above steps, but archive your Favorites into a ZIP file, then copy the ZIP file instead of each individual Favorite to the removable media. On the second computer, copy the ZIP file from the removable media to your computer, and then unzip the file to the Favorites folder.

Option C. This takes less time to copy, and if you have a lot of Favorites, you may have to go this route to fit them all on a floppy disk. This will NOT keep each Favorite's icon and visit count intact.

1. Insert your removable media.

2. From Internet Explorer choose "File" - "Import and Export".

3. The "Import/Export Wizard" will appear. Click "Next".

4. Click "Export Favorites" then "Next".

5. Click "Next".

6. Select "Export to a File or Address" if it is not already selected.

7. Click "Browse" and find your removable media drive.

8. For the filename, use "favorites.htm" and press ENTER.

9. Click "Next".

10. Click "Finish"

11. Click "OK" to confirm the Favorites have been successfully exported.

12. Once the export has completed, burn the CD (if necessary) and safely eject your removable media.

Now on the other computer:

1. Insert your removable media.

2. From Internet Explorer choose "File" - "Import and Export".

3. The "Import/Export Wizard" will appear. Click "Next".

4. Click "Import Favorites" then "Next".

6. Click the "Browse" button and find your removable media's drive.
