Internet Explorer 7 Toolbar - Menu Bar - Status Bar

Customize the Links Toolbar

SUMMARY: Modify the link shortcuts available in Internet Explorer 7's Links toolbar.

Internet Explorer 7's Links toolbar, designated by the "Links" text and normally underneath the address toolbar, provides convenient access to frequently-used websites. Depending on your configuration, Internet Explorer 7 may have links to Microsoft-centric websites such as Hotmail and Windows Marketplace. If you would like to remove these links and/or add sites of your own to the Links toolbar, do the following:

If the Links toolbar is not visible, you can first toggle displaying Internet Explorer 7's Links toolbar to make it visible.

* To remove a site from the Links toolbar

Right-click the item and select "Delete" from the pop-up menu that follows.

* To add a website link to the Links toolbar

1. Visit a webpage you wish to add, then left-click on the webpage's icon directly to the left of the address bar and keep the mouse button held down.

2. Drag the icon to the links bar and release the mouse button.

The below movie illustrates this procedure:

Or, you can drag links that may appear on the Desktop, inside a webpage, or in your Favorites menu.

* To rearrange links on the Links toolbar

1. Left-click on a link to move and keep the mouse button held down.

2. Move your mouse to where you wish the link to reappear and release the button.

* To customize a link's name, icon, or URL in the Links toolbar

1. Right-click the link to customize and choose "Properties".

2. On the multi-tabbed dialog box that follows you can customize the link's name by clicking the "General" tab and entering a new name.

3. Click on the "Web Documents" tab to change the link's URL or to change the icon.

4. When done, press "OK" to close the dialog box.

* To create a shortcut key for a link in the Links toolbar

You can create a shortcut keystroke combination that will visit a particular website in your Links toolbar.

1. Right-click the desired link to customize and choose "Properties".

2. On the multi-tabbed dialog box that appears, click the "Web Document" tab.

3. Next to "Shortcut Key", enter in a key combination involving the Shift, Alt, and/or Ctrl keys and a letter or number. Make sure this is a key combination not used by other applications; to help ensure this, I recommend using all three modifiers.

For example, to create a shortcut to MalekTips Computer Help I would use the following shortcut:

Ctrl + Shift + Alt + M

Note also that you cannot use Shift alone as a keystroke modifier.

4. When done, press "OK" to close the dialog box.
