Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

Enable or Disable Website AutoComplete

SUMMARY: Tired of Internet Explorer 7 automatically filling in web addresses as you type? Or do you wish to enable this feature?

Depending on your configuration, as you begin to type web addresses into Internet Explorer 7, it will search your browsing history and display websites matching what you type. This way, instead of retyping the same website over and over again, you can merely select your desired site from a pull-down list. An example is below:

For privacy, especially if you share your computer with others, you may not want people to see the list of websites previously visited. Or, perhaps AutoComplete is not working and you wish to turn it on.

To disable or enable website AutoComplete, follow the instructions below. If you wish to disable website AutoComplete you can view the below movie for a demonstration.

1. Select "Tools" - "Internet Options".

2. When the "Internet Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Content" tab.

3. Next to "AutoComplete" click "Settings".

4. The "AutoComplete Settings" dialog box will appear. Next to "Web addresses" check or uncheck the box as desired.

5. Click "OK" on the dialog boxes to close them.

Now, if you disabled website AutoComplete and wish to clear the AutoComplete history (which is the same thing as clearing your browser history):

1. Click "Tools" - "Delete Browsing History".

2. When the "Delete Browsing History" dialog box appears, click "Delete history".

3. A "Delete History" warning dialog box will appear. Click "Yes".

4. Click "Close" to close the "Delete Browsing History" dialog box.

This tweak will also affect auto-completion in the "Start" - 'Run" dialog box.
