IrfanView 3

Rotate or Flip Images

SUMMARY: Fix horizon line problems or digital photos taken at a 90 degree angle with IrfanView.

Have you taken digital photos that look a little skewed to one side where the horizon line isn't straight? Or, perhaps you rotated your camera 90 degrees to take a portrait versus a landscape photo, and you need to rotate the resulting picture back so it looks correct onscreen. For these or other reasons you may need to rotate or flip photos, and IrfanView can help.

1. First, load an image into IrfanView .

2. Now, perform your flipping and rotating. Note that you will only be modifying the picture onscreen; these changes should not affect your original file unless you explicitly want them to.

From the "Image" menu:

* "Rotate Left" rotates your image 90 degrees to the left. Or, you can press the "L" key.

* "Rotate Right" rotates your image 90 degrees to the right. Or, you can press the "R" key.

* "Custom/Fine Rotation" is great if your image is not straight, for example if your horizon line is a little crooked. Choose your desired rotation angle and the background color of the image. Or, you can press "CTRL+U".

* "Vertical Flip" flips your image vertically. Or, press "V".

* "Horizontal Flip" creates a horizontal mirror-image. Or, press "H".

3. When you are done modifying your image, you can discard the changes by closing IrfanView. Or, save the changes by choosing:

* "File" - "Save" (or "CTRL+S") to overwrite the original image (not recommended).

* "File" - "Save As" (or press "S") to create a new copy of the modified image (recommended). You can then choose the new image filename, type of image file to save (such as BMP, GIF, JPG, and TIF) and where to save the file on your computer, network, or removable media.
