Make the Domain Stand Out in the Location Bar

SUMMARY: Make the domain names stand out in long URLs to help ensure you are visiting the right web sites.

Do you sometimes have trouble making sure you are actually on the websites you think you are on when viewing web pages with very long URLs in Mozilla Firefox? While on a secure site, Firefox displays the domain name next to the address bar. For non-secure sites, however, this does not occur.

With the "LocationBar2" add-on, you can make the different parts of an URL stand out in the location bar, and the domain name can stand out even more in bold and / or a different color. This helps ensure you're visiting the correct site.

The location bar after installing and customizing the LocationBar2 add-on

1. Visit the following page from within Firefox:

* LocationBar2

2. Click the "Add to Firefox" button.

3. The "Software Installation" dialog box will eventually appear. Click "Install Now" as soon as the button is enabled.

Installing the "LocationBar2" add-on

4. Once the add-on has installed, click the "Restart Firefox" button. Depending on your configuration, Firefox may note that it will try to restart your windows and tabs.

5. Once Firefox restarts, as you visit web sites with long URLs, you should note that the domain names stand out from the rest of the URLs.

From the Firefox "Add-ons" dialog box ("Tools" - "Add-ons") click the "Options" button underneath "LocationBar2". From here you can modify options such as adding spacing between the URL segments, changing the domain name color, and whether sub-domains should be grayed. See the above screenshot for an example of how this add-on can make the location bar appear.
