12-16-2004: Microsoft Acquires GIANT Company Software Inc.
 
I was just about ready to add some tips to the next newsletter about GIANT AntiSpyware, but that will now have to wait. According to a press release, Microsoft has acquired GIANT Company Software Inc. Microsoft is planning "within one month" to make a beta version of a spyware detection and removal tool available to Windows 2000 and later users based on GIANT's technology.

12-16-2004: Symantec Purchases Veritas
 
According to a Symantec press release, Symantec (security software maker) and Veritas (storage software maker) have entered into an agreement whereby Symantec will purchase Veritas in an all-stock transaction. The combined company will use the Symantec name. Plans are for the transaction to close in 2Q 2005.

JibJab, makers of "This Land" and "Good to Be in DC", is at it again. In conjunction with Yahoo! Movies, they have developed a new video, Grumpy Santa. View it now before it gets real popular and the servers start to slow. And remember that Santa could use some cash...

12-16-2004: Internet Explorer Vulnerability
 
Security firm Secunia is reporting a "moderately critical" vulnerability in Internet Explorer. According to the advisory, the DHTML Edit ActiveX controller contains a bug that can result in the execution of arbitrary code. No patch is currently available; the only workaround is to disable ActiveX support.

12-15-2004: Adobe Acrobat and Reader Vulnerabilities
 
Security firm iDEFENSE is reporting a vulnerability in Adobe Reader 6.0 - 6.02, as well as Adobe Acrobat. Transactions involving eBooks involve files with the .etd extension. A vulnerabiliy in parsing these files can result in the execution of arbitrary code. Patches are available on the Adobe website.

12-15-2004: Worm W32.Erkez.D@mm
 
Symantec (Symantec and Norton AntiVirus) has released information about a new mass-mailing worm, W32.Erkez.D@mm. Besides searching hard drives for e-mail addresses to infect and sending itself out as file attachments, it can also lower computer security settings, stop running processes, and open up back doors for remote computer access. Be sure to download updated virus definitions from your antivirus software, and ALWAYS be wary of opening file attachments, even if you know the sender! E-mail addresses and senders CAN BE FORGED BY VIRUSES AND WORMS!

12-14-2004: Google to Make Library Books Available Online
 
According to a press release, Google is working with Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, the University of Michigan, and the New York Public Library to digitize library books so they are available online. This will allow users to search through this information through the Google Print (tm) program as well as the main Google search engine itself.

12-14-2004: Microsoft Patches Multiple Vulnerabilities
 
Microsoft has released a set of updates for various versions of Windows, from Windows NT Server 4.0 SP6a up to and including Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP SP2. Be sure to access Windows Update to download and install the patches needed for your system.
 
* Security bulletin MSO-041 fixes two vulnerabilities in Wordpad that could result in remote code execution. * Security bulletin MSO-042 fixes a DHCP vulnerability that could result in a Denial of Service attack, or remote code execution. * Security bulletin MSO-043 fixes a HyperTerminal buffer-overrun vulnerability that could result in remote code execution. * Security bulletin MSO-044 fixes two vulnerabilities in the Windows Kernel and LSASS that could allow users to elevate their privileges on a machine. * Security bulletin MSO-045 fixes two WINS vulnerabilities that could allow remote code execution.
