Mozilla has just released
Version 2.0 Release Candidate 1 of their
Mozilla Firefox web browser. Though still in testing, the browser is available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows users.

September 26, 2006: Critical Microsoft Windows Update
|
Microsoft has released a
Critical Microsoft Windows update
that affects Internet Explorer 5 and 6 for Windows 2000, and Internet Explorer 6 for Windows 2000, XP, and Windows
Server 2003. Visiting a specially-crafted website could result in a malicious user completely controlling your
system.
Updates can be retrieved via
Microsoft Update.

September 20, 2006: Updated Google Search Appliance
|
Google has updated their
Google Search Appliance for enterprises.
Up to 30 million documents can be indexed, search features have been updated, and the device can be administered in
16 languages.

September 20, 2006: Burning Laptop at LA's Airport
|
(via CNET News.com) - A user at the "Something Awful" website posted about a
laptop catching fire over the weekend at
LA's LAX airport. According to investigators, the laptop was a Thinkpad.

|
Microsoft has released their
September, 2006 Security Updates.
These include a Critical update for Microsoft Publisher, a Moderate update for Windows 2000 - Windows 2003, and an
Important update for Windows XP.

September 14, 2006: Apple Updates
|
Apple has made several new releases to support playing movies on iPods.
iTunes 7 has been released,
supporting new album and Cover Flow views of television shows, albums, and movies.
75 movies from studios such as Disney, Pixar, Touchstone, and Miramax are available for download.
Several updates have been made to the iPod product line.
The iPod Nano now has 24 hours of battery life (according to a press release) and expanded music capacity. The iPod
Shuffle is smaller, weighing around half an ounce, and holds one megabyte of storage. The main iPod itself has been
updated with a brighter screen, and the 80GB model supports (according to a press release) up to 20 hours of
battery life for playing music, or up to 5 1/2 hours for video playback.

|
Google has announced
featured content for their Google Earth tool.
Available by selecting "Featured Content" in the Google Earth sidebar, initial content includes data from the
United Nations Environment Program, a World Tour of attractions and landmarks via Discovery Network, information
from the National Park Service, a "geo-blog" from the Jane Goodall Institute, and city video guides from Turn Here.

September 11, 2001.
CNN is showing
their September 11, 2001 coverage on their Pipeline service starting at 8:30a EST.
Fox News is doing the same, and
MSNBC has videos of their coverage.

September 8, 2006: Upcoming Microsoft Updates
|
I've received e-mail from Microsoft stating they are planning on releasing their monthly updates on September 12, 2006.
These may include two Windows-related bulletins, the highest rated Important. A Critical Microsoft Office patch is planned.
Also planned are updates to the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and a couple of non-security high-priority
updates.

September 8, 2006: Amazon Goes to the Movies
|
Amazon has announced
Amazon Unbox,
a service offering digital video downloads in DVD quality. Movies can be purchased on one PC and downloaded to another.
Prices according to the press release: "Unbox customers can purchase television series episodes for $1.99 per episode,
purchase most movies for between $7.99 and $14.99, or rent the latest movies for $3.99."
To promote the service they are offering a free TV show download.

September 6, 2006: Google News Archive Search
|
Google has announced that their
Google News service
now supports a 200+ year old archive search. As noted in their
press release, searching for
information about the 1969 moon landing in the news archive search will display links to articles written around that time.
While many newspapers charge to display information from their archives,
some information sources, such as Time magazine, seem to be supplying articles for free.

September 5, 2006: Word 2000 Exploit
|
Security firm Secunia has announced an "Extremely Critical"
vulnerability in Microsoft Word 2000, based on
an
advisory from Symantec.
By opening malicious documents, this "actively exploited" vulnerability can be triggered, leading to the execution of
arbitrary code. NO PATCH IS YET AVAILABLE.

September 5, 2006: Windows Vista RC1 Testing and Pricing
|
According to a
Microsoft press release.
Microsoft is planning to open Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 to a broader testing circle of customers and partners. The code will be
released to Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP) participants this week, and Microsoft is also planning to reopen the program.
On a related note, Microsoft has
released pricing information for all versions of Windows Vista.

|
Mozilla has released
Beta 2 of the upcoming Mozilla Firefox 2 web browser.
Updates include built-in phishing protection (experimental until the final release), visual updates, a session restore feature, and
search suggestions when querying the Google, Yahoo!, or Answers.com engines.

September 4, 2006: Apple Settles Another Lawsuit
|
(Via Engadget) Apple has
settled another lawsuit, this
time regarding the iTunes interface. According to Engadget:
"Some of the functionality which the company claims was copied by Apple includes using a menu selection
process to select music, the ability to search and sort music based on the genre, artist, and album, and
transferring music from a library to a portable music player."
