October 18, 2006: Internet Explorer 7
Microsoft has released Version 7 of their Internet Explorer web browser. This version has an updated look-and-feel, tabbed web browsing, improved printing support, RSS feed support, and updated search and security features.

October 6, 2006: Upcoming Microsoft Updates
Microsoft has sent out e-mail notifying users about their planned October updates. Though subject to change, on October 10, Microsoft aims to release:
 
* Six Windows updates, the highest marked Critical
* Four Microsoft Office updates, the highest marked Critical
* A Moderate update involving Microsoft .NET
* Updates to the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
* Two non-security related but High-Priority updates

October 6, 2006: Google Groups Beta
Google has released a beta version of their Google Groups application. Sporting a redesigned interface, the beta Google Groups also allows group owners to create group welcome messages, web pages, a files section, and a member area.

October 4, 2006: WebViewFolderIcon Vulnerability Being Exploited
According to a Microsoft TechNet Security Advisory, the WebViewFolderIcon ActiveX control vulnerability is being exploited in the wild. While Microsoft plans on issuing a security update around October 10 (subject to change), the advisory does list several suggested workarounds, including how to prevent the ActiveX control from running in Internet Explorer.

October 4, 2006: Vista Activation Requirements
As part of a news release on software protection, Microsoft announced that Vista and the Windows Server "Longhorn" will come built-in with new anti-piracy and counterfeit detection measures. Windows Vista, similar to Windows XP, must be activated within 30 days to prevent the system from going into a "reduced functionality mode".

In addition, users of non-genuine Windows Vista software will be notified if their copy of Windows Vista is determined to be non-genuine with the appearance of a persistent statement in the lower right hand corner of their desktop space that reads, "T$

October 2, 2006: Possible Mozilla Firefox Exploit
CNET News.com is reporting on a possible Mozilla Firefox exploit involving Mozilla Firefox's implementation of JavaScript. More details are at the aforementioned link.
