Sites to Browse - Misc - Maps of U.S. Newspaper Layoffs

SUMMARY: Display newspaper-related maps including where layoffs have occurred and where newspapers have shuttered their print editions and moved exclusively to the web.

Newspaper difficulties have seemingly become a fact of modern life. When this tip was written, Denver lost one of its two main newspapers. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer went exclusively to the web. Major newspapers have severely reduced their staffs or threatened to close.

The "paper cuts" website was developed by Erica Smith to track what is happening to the US newspaper industry. While maybe this site should not be viewed by already depressed newspaper workers, it does serve as a historical illustration of what is happening to this news medium.

A map of where newspaper layoffs have occurred - this changes often

Maps and information include:

* Layoffs and buyouts by year
* Closed newspapers
* Web-only newspapers
* Where layoffs are rumored
* Where layoffs are reported
* A job board - some places are (gasp!) hiring!
