Outlook 2003 - Sending Email - UUencode Attachments

SUMMARY: Encode attachments in Outlook 2003 so older computers can read the files.

If you need to send file attachments to people running e-mail clients on older computers, you may need to convert the attachments to something called UUencode. This is simply another way of sending e-mail attachments in a way those with older machines can view the files correctly. UUencode takes binary files and, through a conversion process, turns them into ASCII text. On the other end, your recipient would then UUdecode the files using software on their machine.

When sending e-mail to other Windows clients, you should rarely have to make this change. However, if you are asked to UUencode attachments for a particular recipient running an older machine, do the following:

1. While composing an e-mail message, attach your files normally.

2. Click the "Options" button.

3. When the "Options" dialog box appears, click on the "Attachment format" pull-down and choose "UUencode".

4. Click "Close" to close the dialog box.
