Remove EXIF Information Before Distributing Pictures

SUMMARY: If you want to keep information about how you took particular photos private, use PhotoScape to delete the EXIF information.

JPEG images in particular (though supported by some other image types) may include what is called EXIF, or Exchangeable Image File Format, information. This may include the camera used to take a photo, the exposure time, aperture, and/or other information.

In some cases you may wish to distribute this information to others when sending image files, for example if you are uploading photos to the Flickr image service and want others to see technical aspects of how you snapped the pictures. In other scenarios, however, you may wish to keep this private. Several tools exist to help automate the process of deleting this information, and PhotoScape comes with such a tool.

1. Make backups of your original images in case you need the original EXIF information for your own use or if there is a problem with the deletion operation. PhotoScape may do this for you (see below), but perform a manual backup just in case.

2. From the Viewer tool, right-click on an image. Or select multiple images and right-click one of them.

3. Select "Delete Exif info".

4. Confirm your decision.

5. Click "OK" when PhotoScape states the information has been deleted.

Note that PhotoScape should create a folder underneath the current folder called "Originals" which contains the originals with the EXIF information intact.
