Splitting Images into Smaller Pieces

SUMMARY: PhotoScape can split images into smaller pieces, useful when transferring larger images and user download speed is a concern.

Need to display a very large image on a webpage, and user download speed is a concern as you suspect many users are still on dial-up or slow wireless connections? For this and other reasons, you can split large images into smaller pieces via PhotoScape, then arrange the pieces together.

1. From PhotoScape's main screen, click the "Splitter" icon.

2. The "Splitter" dialog box appears. Click the "Add" button, then navigate your computer to add a file to split. You can repeat this step to split multiple files at the same time if desired.

3. Now choose how large you want the image slices to be. Click the "Col, Row" tab and choose the number of slice columns and rows. Or, click the "Width, Height" tab and enter the maximum size of the image blocks in pixels, width and height. As you make a change, you should notice the image in the preview window being "cut" via dotted lines.

4. To perform the split process, click the "Split" button.

5. The "Split" dialog box appears. From here you can change various options:

* Click the desired radio button to place the folder of split images as a subfolder of the original image folder, or place the split images in a folder of your choosing. Choose "Create your output folder under the original photo" or "Save your split photos in the designated folder".

* Underneath "Image Format", click the pull-down to choose a new image format if desired. Options are:

* JPG
* PNG
* BMP
* GIF

If you choose JPG, click and drag the slider underneath "JPEG Quality" to adjust the output image quality. Move the slider to the left to decrease quality (and file size) or to the right to increase quality (and file size).

6. When done with your selections, click the "Split" button. Dialogs will appear showing progress and when the split process completes. Images will be named in the following format:

FILENAME_NUMBER.EXTENSION

For example, if the original image filename is IMG_3415.jpg, then splits will be named as such:

* IMG_3415_001.jpg
* IMG_3415_002.jpg
* IMG_3415_003.jpg
..etc
