Is Underlined Text Boring? Apply Waves, Dots, Colors, More

SUMMARY: A variety of ways to underline text is at your disposal when designing slides in PowerPoint 2010.

You probably know that pressing the "U" button in the "Font" section of the "Home" tab of the Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Ribbon underlines the selected text. CTRL + U does the same thing.

What you might not know is that there are other ways you can underline text such as with dots, dashes, double underlines, and waves. You can even make the underline colors different from the font colors, as seen in the screenshot to the right.

1. Select the text you wish to underline.

2. Open the "Font" dialog box. You can do this by selecting the "Home" tab in the Ribbon, then clicking the arrow at the bottom-right of the "Font" section. Or, press CTRL + SHIFT + F.

3. The "Font" dialog box appears. As desired, click the pull-down next to "Underline style" to choose from a variety of different ways to underline your text. Click the pull-down next to "Underline color" to open a pop-up menu where you can choose a different color underline. Clicking the "More Colors" link in this pop-up menu lets you choose from any color.
