Microsoft Publisher 2010

Add a Drop Cap for Style

SUMMARY: Insert a stylized initial drop cap to the first sentence of paragraphs in a Publisher 2010 document.

Depending on the document design, you may consider adding a Drop Cap to the first paragraph of a publication in Microsoft Publisher 2010, or perhaps at the beginning of each section of a publication. These are stylized first and optional following characters of a sentence, usually larger and often in a different font.

Publisher 2010 comes with 15 default styles from which you may choose, or you can create your own custom styles by changing the number of drop lines, size and number of letters, font, style, and color. Just insert your cursor inside a paragraph where you want the Drop Cap to appear, and then do the following:

1. Click the "Format (Text Box Tools)" tab that appears in the Ribbon.

2. In the "Typography" section, click the "Drop Cap" button.

3. Choose from the 15 default styles from the pop-up, or click the top-left style to remove an existing drop cap.

Choosing a Drop Cap style in Pubilsher 2010

For more variety, click the "Custom Drop Cap" menu item. From here a "Drop Cap" dialog box appears.

* Select the "Dropped" box to force the Drop Cap inline with text, or click the "Up" button to make the Drop Cap appear above most of the text. Changing the "lines high" text box alters how far above the text the Drop Cap will appear.

* Next to "Size of letters", choose how large the Drop Cap will appear, in a scale of lines of text high. The minimum is 2 lines (1 line would not be a Drop Cap), and the maximum is 32 lines.

* Next to "Number of letters" you can choose to stylize more than just the first character of a paragraph. The maximum number of letters is 15.

* To change the font, uncheck "Use current font" and click the pull-down next to "Font".

* To change the font style (Bold, Italic), uncheck "Use current font style" and click the pull-down next to "Font style".

* To change the color of the Drop Cap, uncheck "Use current color" and click the pull-down next to "Color".
