Copy Terminal Output to Clipboard in Rich Text Format

SUMMARY: Place output from remote systems accessed in Putty into the clipboard in rich text, keeping colors and other formatting intact.

Depending on your configuration, when you use Putty to copy the output of remote systems to the clipboard, only the text may get copied. Colors, reversed characters, and other formatting is ignored.

If you wish, you can configure Putty to copy text formatting, including the current font, into the clipboard. This allows you to paste a more accurate representation of remote system output into a word processor or other application that supports rich text formatting.

Example of Putty output copied into the clipboard keeping RTF intact, then pasted into Microsoft Word

1. Open Putty.

2. Click on the "Session" link in the left pane.

3. In the right pane, click "Default Settings", or a defined session, then the "Load" button.

4. Expand the "Window" tree in the left pane.

5. Click "Selection" in the left pane.

6. In the right pane, underneath "Formatting of pasted characters", check "Paste to clipboard in RTF as well as plain text".

7. Click on the "Session" link in the left pane.

8. Choose the session name you chose in #3, or "Default Settings".

9. Click the "Save" button.

Note that if you change the default settings, you will still need to change the settings for each saved session.
